marycrawfordMy brain is empty and I can't concentrate on anything serious, so I started watching Granting You a Dreamlike Life on Youtube, which is nicely HD and has smooth English subs. It's a soap opera, full of the kind of "romance" cliches that drive me crazy, and the only reason I keep watching (I'm at...ep 10 I think?) is because it's got Zhu Yilong and I'm a sucker.
That said, his character, Luo Fusheng, is a delight - for once he's playing someone who lets his emotions spill all over his face, even if he also still loves to hide them away behind a smile and tell people he's fine after he got shot (aka: the Zhu Yilong special). SO much fun to watch, he's incredibly alive in every scene.
Plus, there was a fight scene where he kept listening to and appreciating (badly dubbed, but never mind) Chinese opera while downing guys right and left with careless competence, and I love that kind of thing.

Date: 2022-02-02 09:25 pm (UTC)He is! After Guardian, this was the first show I watched with Zhu Yilong in it, and I was amazed by how completely different he was. I feel like I wasn't really aware of just how much performance went into the creation of Shen Wei as a character until I saw Zhu Yilong on this show being 100% Not Shen Wei. I can't say I really cared for the show as such (the plot is kind of a disaster, as you've probably been warned already), but I still think of it rather fondly because he was just so good in it.

Date: 2022-02-03 11:42 am (UTC)Oh, yes! Yeah, it really is startling to see. I watched Lost Tomb Reboot next after Guardian, and that was a similar experience. And I'm not expecting much from Dreamlike Life; I loved Lost Tomb, where I just had to scroll past the stupid B plot arcs, and with Dreamlike Life I'm mostly fastforwarding past any scene Luo Fusheng isn't in. But he is so good in it, as you say.
(Can you believe that he went straight to Dreamlike Life after finishing Guardian? I can't even imagine the mental workload.)

Date: 2022-02-03 03:07 pm (UTC)I watched the show in a watchalong, so I couldn't fast-forward through anything though there were many scenes I'd have liked to skip. That said, for fic purposes it's useful to have the whole story, even if the whole story doesn't make any sense.
Too many WIPs, too little time, as they say. Or as I say, anyway. I keep switching between things (nominally I'm continuing the accidental marriage longfic) and thus getting even less done. Very excited about your Guardian AU though! I wish you much motivation.

Date: 2022-02-03 09:28 pm (UTC)I admit I don't skip as much as I want to, because I do need some sense of the story just to make sense of things, but on Youtube it's easy to skip 10-15 secs ahead until I see LFS's face again. XD
I hope you can keep going with the accidental marriage longfic, it sounds so tasty! And you know I appreciate your encouragement. \o/

Date: 2022-02-06 12:36 pm (UTC)Sadly, when viki reuploaded the eps to get rid of the hardsubs, some of the more violent scenes were cut and now some eps (three, I believe) are extremely out of sync. You can watch those on youtube instead.
(Also, the subs team didn't have an editor, and only the first 22 or so eps have been completely edited, so there are more typos later.)
