Five Things meme, fit the second

More Five Things, coming up! Man, this is fun. Many thanks to [livejournal.com profile] falzalot and [livejournal.com profile] aka_arduinna for helping me out with these.

For [livejournal.com profile] halimede:

Five things abandoned under a chair or in a corner in Jareth's throne room.

1) Underneath his throne: a scattering of owl pellets. Some have bits of mice in them, some have...other things.

2) Stuffed into a drafty hole near the window: a white silk handkerchief, monogrammed in a crabbed goblin hand.

3) Kicked into a corner: a crystal ball with a crack in it. One day he will invent a better scrying glass, to watch her across the worlds.

4) Lining a goblin's nest: an old, blood-stained map of the Labyrinth, with all the death traps marked in pencil and notes like, "Seed eyestalks here."

5) Behind his throne, safely out of sight: a bracelet, dangling plastic charms. Jareth pretends he doesn't know it's there, but he won't let any of the goblins use it for a teething ring.

For [livejournal.com profile] roo2:

Five things Hercules never told Iolaus. And vice versa.

Hercules never told Iolaus:

1) That he arm-wrestled Atalanta and lost. If he told that story, he'd have to explain just how he lost, and Iolaus would snicker his head off, and. Well. Just. The subject never came up, okay?

2) How much he missed the jester's cooking. And how much it worried him that apparently, he shared the Sovereign's taste in food.

3) That he won a dance competition in Rhumba. Iolaus and the widow Twanky would probably get on like a house on fire, and Hercules would rather be eaten by another giant snake than see it happen.

4) That in Sumeria, he lay on the marble floor for days, staring up at Iolaus' dead body, waiting for the impossible. That he cursed himself, the gods, even Iolaus for not coming back to him. He would tell, if Iolaus asked; but Iolaus never asked. Maybe he already knew.

5) That he was already working on another blanket, for when this one fell apart.

Iolaus never told Hercules:

1) That sometimes, he could really see a family resemblance between Ares and Hercules, especially when they fought, and that he suspected Ares of pulling his punches.

2) That even when he was running from her, he thought Callisto was really hot, in a batshit insane, we're all going to die sort of way.

3) That he saw Gabrielle tortured in another reality and didn't save her, because he chose Hercules' life over hers, and that he could still hear the screams.

4) That he loved making Hercules explain things, and sometimes he acted dumb just to see Hercules use gestures that would get him arrested if he wasn't a demigod.

5) That he still dreamed of the Light, and when he woke up, everything felt unreal and out of focus, and he had trouble remembering to breathe. Hercules never said anything, just wrapped the blankets around the both of them and held on.

::giggling:: Iolaus and the Widow Twanky *would* get on like a house afire! And ow. Poor Iolaus. His are painful. Well, other than Callisto.

Thanks!

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
*grins at you*

I really do want to read the story where Iolaus and Twanky meet; then again, the universe might explode, or something.

1) That sometimes, he could really see a family resemblance between Ares and Hercules, especially when they fought, and that he suspected Ares of pulling his punches.

Ooh, nice one!

[identity profile] halimede.livejournal.com 2006-08-31 08:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, dude, and the Labyrinth ones too! I just have a short attention span today, so I kind of got distracted by the last one there. *g*

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
Hee. Hey, I'm glad the Herc one arrested your attention too. :-)

Oh, man. I just love how these make me giggle and then turn around and hit me right in the gut.

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 11:10 am (UTC)(link)
*beams* That is really nice to hear. Thanks!

[identity profile] eldritchhobbit.livejournal.com 2006-08-31 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Ugh! How could you make me teary-eyed with a "5 things" list, for heaven's sake? The "Iolaus Never Told Herc" entries are brilliant.

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 11:11 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you! And aw. I'd say sorry, but secretly I love that I could make you teary-eyed. *cough*

More H&I Five Things coming up later today.

3) That he saw Gabrielle tortured in another reality and didn't save her, because he chose Hercules' life over hers, and that he could still hear the screams.

I'm sorry, but I feel like I'm missing something here. Is this a reference to something that happened on the shows? I'm confuzzled.

Oh, and btw, thanks for the download. I haven't finished watching MotM yet, but I'm almost done. There's tension everywhere in that film. :-)

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 11:15 am (UTC)(link)
Is this a reference to something that happened on the shows?

Oh, yes - it's in the Armageddon Now two-parter, where Iolaus goes back in time to save Herc's future. After he fails and Alcmene dies, he gets to a timeline where Xena is a cruel Empress, and one of the scenes we see briefly is one where Gabrielle, a slave, is protesting her reign. If I remember right, Xena orders her legs to be broken, and Iolaus is in the scene too, trying to get to Xena and steal the Chronos stone. It was quite a horrific moment. Of course, later on that timeline doesn't exist anymore, so it never happened...but still.

And hey, I'm glad you got the download to work, yay! I hope you had fun with it. :-)

[identity profile] kelleah.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 05:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh yeah. Now I remember. Gotcha.

My brain is not what it used to be. :-P

[identity profile] castalianspring.livejournal.com 2006-08-31 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Those are brilliant. Very, very nice.

*beams* Thank you!

[identity profile] cyloran.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 12:51 am (UTC)(link)
Love them all. Brilliant! :D

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 11:16 am (UTC)(link)
Hee, thanks a lot! There will probably be more later today.

Wow! Happyhappyhappy!
Your love for Iolaus makes my life a happier place!
Thank you!!!!

Hey. My job is looking for someone to translate a document from Dutch into English ASAP (an order issued by a Netherlands Antilles Court). They are looking either for a lawyer or an official translator, but anyone who is fluent in both might do in a pinch. They are in a hurry!

Any ideas? Thanks.

that was me

[identity profile] par-avion.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
stoopid LJ logging me out!

Re: that was me

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 06:26 am (UTC)(link)
Hey,

Usually when we have stuff like this at work, we call a large translation bureau, where they have native speaker translators in all kinds of languages available. Sounds like that would be a good option here.

I'd love to help you out myself, but I don't think I'm qualified for that, especially if it's something official, I'm sorry!

Re: that was me

[identity profile] par-avion.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
The problem is that I am in NYC and everyone (including the translation agencies I have used before) is asleep! I think the document needs to be translated before 10 am EDT.

Do you have a recommendation for a European-based translation agency?

Re: that was me

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 11:09 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I see! I hope this is still in time for you:

These guys (Bothof) are an accredited translation agency that I've used before. Just add 0031 to the phone number (so it's 0031-24-323 1465) and you should be able to reach them.

Best of luck!

OMG LOVE.

That even when he was running from her, he thought Callisto was really hot, in a batshit insane, we're all going to die sort of way.

So true... so true...

That he was already working on another blanket, for when this one fell apart.
Ok, is it weird that I almost got tears with this one?

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 11:19 am (UTC)(link)
Ok, is it weird that I almost got tears with this one?

Aw! Well, it makes me really happy to hear that, so I'd vote no. :-)

[identity profile] in-vulnerable.livejournal.com 2006-09-01 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Iolaus and the widow Twanky would probably get on like a house on fire, and Hercules would rather be eaten by another giant snake than see it happen.
Oh, god! The possibilities!

5) That he was already working on another blanket, for when this one fell apart.
*sigh* Maybe I'm a total girl, but the blanket is one of my favourite Herc/Iolaus moments.

2) That even when he was running from her, he thought Callisto was really hot, in a batshit insane, we're all going to die sort of way.
Well, duh!

5) *loves*

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2006-09-02 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
*sigh* Maybe I'm a total girl, but the blanket is one of my favourite Herc/Iolaus moments.

Aw! Well, mine too, obviously. Heh.

One of the things I love about that moment is that if it had happened in fanfic, we might have looked at it sideways, thinking "Yeah, well, Hercules is a nurturing kinda guy, but surely he wouldn't go that far". But it's CANON. And I adore it.

[identity profile] swiss-kun.livejournal.com 2006-09-03 04:31 pm (UTC)(link)
It amazes me that you can make something like a story out of these. Truely they fall into the category of something like artwork (grins). Difficult stuff, a lot of it, though. Funny how you can be smiling and sad at the same time. It's real life stuff. And I think it's why I like your work so much.

The answers with Iphicles were interseting too.

Is it too late to make a request?

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2006-09-03 05:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, it's interesting doing these - in a way, like drabbles, where you try to convey a lot in a very few words. Some of them will probably be shorter, though, it depends on the prompt.

Thanks for your kind comments! And sure, go ahead, ask me one. :-)

[identity profile] swiss-kun.livejournal.com 2006-09-04 04:26 am (UTC)(link)
I can't decide. Pick, if the muse desends:

1) 5 things Iolaus doesn't know people say about him.

or

2) 5 things that make Hercules regret being a hero.

[identity profile] marycrawford.livejournal.com 2006-10-07 09:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Posted, and thanks!
